What it's like attending an open day at University of Suffolk

On the 23rd of September (2017) I visited the University of Suffolk in Ipswich for their Open Day to look at two different courses I thought suited me. I had a look at the Graphic Design/Illustration course and their Computer Games Design course. I was really impressed by the modern buildings and the student accommodation, which was close to both the town and the university- and had its own launderette inside the building. Most importantly though, the buildings had FREE WIFI! Everybody was polite and helpful, and both students and course directors were on hand to answer any questions.

Both courses had formal and informal discussions in which potential students could ask course directors questions- and I went to discussions for both of the courses I had chosen. Unfortunately, I didn’t feel that either of the courses were for me. I am interested in concept art, drawing and sketching out my own designs and ideas. The Computer Games Design course at Ipswich was more about programming and designing assets for games than what I wanted to do, and the Graphic Design/Illustration course wasn’t what I was expecting either- focusing more on product design and font making.

This was my first open day experience at a University, and I’m really pleased that I went. Even though I feel like I won’t pursue the University of Suffolk’s courses in the future, I learnt a little bit more about the careers that those courses will lead onto and more about university life that I would have known before.
