The world of Pokemon is full of fantastic beasts and adorable animals in every shape, size, species and ability known to man! Within this amazing planet is also a plethora of theatrical movies based off the anime based off the video game. Over the years I've noticed a change in these movies which I wish to talk about.

[Released in 2003 and based primarily on the third generation of Pokemon games, Ruby and Sapphire in 2003 also]
This movie... isn't that great. The story felt stagnant the entire time even when they reference the history the main "villain" has.
Every 1000 years a comet appears. Using the power of the comet the "villain" awakens the wish-maker Pokemon, Jirachi, to grant his wish to be able to bring back the legendary Pokemon Groudon to show his peers from Team Rocket who laughed at him that it is possible to bring the fossil of Groudon he found back to life!

Jirachi makes friends with Max (One of the new Poke-Crew in the show) which in the grand scheme of things, doesn't matter. It's not even as heart felt as Latios and Latias in the last Pokemon movie. The reason for that is because of the implications of Pokemon Heroes that Latios dies. They're siblings who were torn apart and now Latias is left with her friends to make up for it.

In this movie, Jirachi is just a kid with benefits. Just someone to extort their powers for. No repercussions or anything of serious implications until the "villain's" wish that only creates a clone of Groudon that sucks up the energy of the surrounding area to sustain itself.
Also Absol's there. Because they apparently can detect danger in... the force?

The reason I find it so stagnant, as previously described, is mostly because of how it doesn't do anything particularly devastating. It all starts from mindless antics with the of a genie. Actually I think that's where it all stems from. It just feels like a bad genie flick. Not only that but it feels restrained. It's always set in this bloody festival for the comet and we know it only lasts a week giving the whole movie an expiry date of when to expect the bad stuff.equivalent

Groudon was kinda cool I guess...

[Released in 2004 and based primarily on the third generation of Pokemon games, Ruby and Sapphire in 2003 as a teaser to the third game in the third generation of Pokemon, Emerald released in 2005]
This is a personal favourite for some reason. I'm not sure why I like it so much, I just do. Probably because it has Deoxys, the space Pokemon in it. That or how obligatorily Sci-Fi it is.
Anyhoo, This movie's setting is in the battle city which is a feature that later got introduced in the forth generation of Pokemon, Diamond and Pearl.

The more I watched this film the more I got intrigued by the story.
Deoxys crashed on earth and was attacked immediately by Rayquaza while it was trying to retrieve a large opaque stone. In the process giving one of the one-off characters a fear of Pokemon which doesn't really matter to me as much as Deoxys. It's a good reminder of how interesting Deoxys was set up to be.

Years later at the Battle tower, The parents of said child with fear of Pokemon who also happen to be scientists, are studying the stone and Deoxys' amazing regenerative abilities. Because of these abilities, Deoxys returns now fully recovered from its fight with Rayquaza to keep searching for the opaque stone and abducting Battle Tower visitors from the powered down facility to keep them out of the way. It's later found out the stone is another Deoxys with a dodgy regen ability. The only way it has been communicating is as a... spirit.

Just like the child befriending said spirit, not that important. Apart from the fact that the spirit is a signal which the overuse of electrical machines in Battle tower makes it hard for the other Deoxys hard to detect through.
Mainly just a friendly misunderstanding mostly. Although it is refreshing to have a Pokemon movie without a main villain entirely. No second agendas or conscience Pokemon trying to destroy humanity or take over the world. Not even a story full of morals. Just a misunderstanding with high stakes between a large dragon and an alien.
Why was Rayquaza attacking Deoxys you ask?
Just a territorial thing.
